Soil & Water: Onions prefer loose, fertile, friable, well-drained soil with plenty of added organic matter. Their shallow root system is sensitive to fluctuations in water. Mulch to conserve water and control weeds.
Planting & Growing: Direct seed onions as soon as soil can be worked or start transplants 10-12 weeks before planting date. Sow thickly in flats or 1” cells, in singles, doubles or triples. When seedlings reach 5” trim to 1” if growing for bulbs. For a continuous supply of scallions, plant every 2 weeks.
Harvesting & Storage: For scallions, harvest at 12-15" tall just before the bulb begins to swell. For full size onions, harvest when bulb has reached the desired size.
