Four regional perennial tracks
Sacramento Valley floor: Mild air can coincide with waterlogged clay and frost pockets. Test the full planting depth, keep equipment off wet root zones and confirm where excess water will leave. Fog and leaf wetness affect disease and pruning timing.
Delta-influenced gardens: Wind affects dormant stock, canes, ties and new roots. Shelter roots during handling, anchor supports and inspect abrasion. Do not diagnose wind injury as disease without signs.
Lower Sierra foothills: Integrate slope stability, fire-safe cover and pressure differences. Plant only where roots can be watered uniformly and runoff will not expose them. Stabilize access before carrying tools or stock.

Verify chill and hardiness without confusing them
Winter chill describes accumulated cool conditions relevant to dormancy and fruiting for a particular cultivar; USDA hardiness zones summarize average annual extreme minimum temperature. Neither alone proves fit. Heat, rootstock, disease, soil, water, bloom timing and late frost can all affect performance.
Use current cultivar and institutional information and the garden's local records. A Valley low spot, Delta wind exposure and foothill bench can differ substantially. Qualify all chill and hardiness claims; do not guarantee flowering, fruit set, survival or yield.
Receive and plant bare-root trees only into a ready site

Plant into native site soil with drainage suitable for the plant. Avoid creating a richly amended pocket that keeps roots circling or changes water movement. Set the root crown or graft relationship according to crop guidance. Water the planting to settle soil only when the site can drain and weather makes application safe.
If Valley clay is saturated or foothill ground is frozen, use the approved temporary-care plan rather than forcing the hole. If the delay exceeds supplier guidance, contact the supplier. A shipping window is not permission to damage soil.
Use a source-to-root planting sequence
- Confirm identity. Match label, cultivar, rootstock and order before removing protection.
- Inspect roots and top. Photograph damage or discrepancies and contact the supplier when guidance requires it.
- Protect roots during setup. Limit exposure to drying wind, sun and freezing temperatures.
- Recheck the hole and outlet. Soil must be workable through the intended operation and the site must drain.
- Set depth and orientation. Follow crop guidance for crown, root flare, graft and support.
- Backfill with the site soil as directed. Avoid creating an isolated rich pocket or burying the trunk.
- Water and settle only under safe conditions. Confirm the wetting pattern without leaving roots saturated.
- Cover and protect. Keep mulch and guards clear of the trunk/crown and compatible with fire and rodent needs.
- Inspect after events. Recheck depth, heaving, ties, moisture and drainage after rain, wind, freeze or snow.
Plan first-year water before planting
A bare-root tree needs an establishment hydrozone that can be monitored separately from lawn, native slope vegetation or mature trees. In Valley clay, fewer but carefully measured applications may be appropriate only after drainage and root-zone moisture are understood. On foothill slopes, emitter placement and pressure must prevent a dry upper root zone and saturated lower edge.
Rain and snow do not guarantee uniform recharge. Check beneath cover and in rain shadows. Do not keep the planting hole saturated or shut irrigation down for the season without evidence. Use the winter drainage checks to trace water from the source through the new root zone to a safe outlet.
Handle berries and vines as distinct systems

Prune by crop, purpose and weather

Wait when frost damage is not fully expressed, rain raises disease concern, tools or footing are unsafe, or the plant is not at the intended dormant stage. Keep records by tree. Pruning does not guarantee disease prevention, fruiting or storm resistance.
Pause before the first pruning cut
Stand back and mark the intended permanent structure. Identify dead, damaged, diseased, crossing and competing wood, but do not assume every category should be removed in one session. Confirm where the crop bears fruit and how the training system uses current and older wood. Consider whether a large cut will expose bark to sun or create a wound during unsuitable weather.
For suspected disease, photograph signs before removing them and use sanitized tools as crop guidance requires. Keep removed material separate until disposal is decided. Do not compost confirmed diseased tissue automatically. If branch size, height or load exceeds the gardener's safe capacity, use a qualified arborist.
Monitor after planting and pruning
After planting, check crown or root-flare position, soil settling, moisture, guard clearance and tie tension. After pruning, check cuts, removed material and structural balance. Repeat after the first strong wind, soaking rain, freeze-thaw or snow. Correct heaving only when soil is workable.
As buds move, separate normal development from stress and verify that delayed cold is still possible. Do not stimulate tender growth with unneeded fertilizer. A soil test, crop need, label and site conditions should control any input.
Protect roots, trunks and structures
Maintain compatible root-zone cover while keeping trunks and crowns clear. In foothills, meet current fire guidance. Inspect guards for girdling and moisture; identify rodent sign before adding a barrier. Check stakes and ties after Delta wind, rain, freeze-thaw or snow.
Repair safe reusable structures rather than replacing whole systems, but retire components that cannot withstand expected load. Do not stand beneath loaded branches or work on ice.

Valley bare-root hold: A tree arrives while clay smears at planting depth. The gardener inspects it, follows supplier-approved temporary care, keeps roots protected and waits for workability. Drainage and root-zone irrigation are corrected before planting.
