Cereal Grain Seeds - Grow Organic

Cereal grain seeds include oats, rye, barley, wheat, triticale, and related grasses used for cover cropping, forage, hay, grain production, erosion protection, or biomass. This collection contains certified-organic and conventional options, along with individual species and mixes. Verify the intended use and certification of each product before planting.

Choose Cereal Grains by Use

  • Cover cropping: Grains can establish fibrous roots, cover soil, capture nutrients, compete with weeds, and produce carbon-rich residue.
  • Forage and hay: Select species and cultivars according to livestock, maturity stage, irrigation, climate, and harvest plan.
  • Grain production: Confirm that the variety, purity, planting rate, and product directions are appropriate for harvest rather than assuming every cover-crop product is intended for food use.
  • Mixes: Grains are often combined with legumes to add structure, biomass, and support for vining crops.

Compare Oats, Rye, Barley, Wheat, and Triticale

Species differ in winter hardiness, planting window, mature height, rooting, biomass, forage quality, and ease of termination. Cereal rye is often selected for cold tolerance and vigorous growth; oats may winter-kill in colder regions; barley, wheat, and triticale provide different balances of hardiness, forage, and residue. Product performance depends on cultivar and local conditions.

Plan Termination and Residue

Grains become more fibrous as they mature. Terminating earlier can make residue easier to manage, while later termination may produce more biomass and increase the risk of seed formation. Plan mowing, grazing, cutting, rolling, incorporation, or harvest before planting.
