Reddish Orange Flesh that is Sweet and Spicy
Melon - Crenshaw - Cucumis melo
Tender Annual Heirloom. Crenshaw Melons produce oblong shaped fruit, with a reddish orange flesh that is sweet and spicy all at once. The vigorous vines love the heat and do very well in the coastal regions of Southern California.
Did You Know? Crenshaw melons were developed by crossing Persian and Casaba melons.
Soil and Water: Melons like moderately rich, well-drained soils with plenty of phosphorous and potassium and a pH of 6.0-6.8. For flavorful fruits, melons need moderate water as seedlings, low water before transplanting, moderate water during growth, and low, even water during fruit development.
Planting and Growing: Start seeds indoors 2-3 weeks before the last frost or seed directly after the last frost. Melons need plentiful heat to develop; use plastic mulch and row covers in cooler climates.
Harvesting and Storage: Crenshaw is a late season variety. Fruit bearing season is from July until October, peaking in August and September. Crenshaws are ripe when the green skin is streaked with gold, has and aroma and the blossom end is slightly soft.
