Start a Southern California fall garden while summer is still hot by separating propagation from bed turnover. Sow a small, protected batch only when you can control temperature, light, airflow and moisture; prepare beds only when soil is workable and irrigation is verified; transplant when the seedling, root zone and forecast are ready at the same time. Turn over beds without losing soil protection
