Collection: Erosion Control Seeds

Low green erosion-control plants with small pale flowers

Collection: Practical cover crop seed for soil stability

Erosion-control seeds and mixes establish vegetation that can help cover soil and reduce exposure to wind, rainfall, runoff, and surface disturbance. The right choice depends on the slope, climate, soil, rainfall or irrigation, planting season, desired lifespan, and how the site will be maintained.

Choose Seed for the Site

  • Temporary cover: Fast-establishing annuals can protect disturbed soil while a site is being prepared or between other plantings.
  • Longer-term cover: Perennial grasses, clovers, and persistent mixes may be better for slopes, roadsides, farm lanes, and areas intended to remain vegetated.
  • Dryland sites: Match the mix to expected rainfall and sow at the appropriate seasonal window rather than relying on irrigation after establishment.
  • Irrigated sites: Select species suited to the planned irrigation level and long-term maintenance.

Establishment Is Critical

Seed alone cannot stabilize every site. Prepare the soil as conditions allow, use the labeled seeding rate, create good seed-to-soil contact, and provide adequate moisture through establishment. Steep, highly disturbed, or actively eroding slopes may also require mulch, erosion-control fabric, wattles, drainage work, or professional site design.

Annual, Perennial, and Reseeding Behavior

Do not assume every product in this collection will reseed or persist indefinitely. Some annuals are temporary, some species may reseed under suitable conditions, and perennial stands require time and maintenance to develop. Review each product’s lifecycle, climate fit, mowing tolerance, and expected establishment period.

Legumes and Coated Seed

Mixes containing legumes may use raw or Nitrocoated seed. Raw legumes may require a compatible seed inoculant; Nitrocoated seed already includes an inoculant coating. Check the product page for the full composition and planting directions.
